In 2012, he was reported as residing in La Garde-Freinet, France. He is a member of an Italian noble family, whose family seat is the Villa Mapelli Mozzi. His title is not officially recognised in either Italy or the UK; he uses the title "as a courtesy".
In 2009, he and his second wife, Ebba, set up the real estate company SCI Crazy House in La Garde-Freinet. They were co-directors and co-shareholders of the company until 2016, when Ebba became sole director and shareholder and changed her name back to von Eckermann.
He was married on 8 March 1978 to Nicola "Nikki" Burrows, from Oxfordshire. They had two children together: Natalia Alice (born 1981) and Edoardo Alessandro (born 1983). In 1989, Nicola married Christopher Shale, a businessman and Conservative politician who died in 2011. She married the sculptor David Williams-Ellis in 2017. She was appointed an MBE in David Cameron's 2016 Resignation Honours list for "political service".
