Cholly Atkins was an American dancer, choreographer, and teacher. He was born in Pratt City, Alabama, and began his career as a dancer in the 1930s. He was best known for his work in the Broadway musicals of the 1950s and 1960s, including "The Pajama Game," "West Side Story," and "Funny Girl." He was also a mentor to many of the great dancers of the era, including Michael Bennett, Bob Fosse, and Gwen Verdon. Atkins was a master of tap, jazz, and Broadway dance styles. He was known for his innovative choreography, which often featured intricate footwork and intricate partnering. He was also a master of improvisation, often creating new steps on the spot. Atkins was inducted into the National Museum of Dance Hall of Fame in 2002. He died in 2003 at the age of 89.
