Christiaan Barnard was a South African cardiac surgeon who performed the world's first successful human-to-human heart transplant. He was born on 8 November 1922 in Beaufort West, South Africa. He studied medicine at the University of Cape Town and graduated in 1945. In 1967, Barnard performed the world's first successful human-to-human heart transplant. The patient, Louis Washkansky, lived for 18 days after the operation. Barnard went on to perform several more heart transplants, and his work revolutionized the field of cardiac surgery. Barnard was awarded numerous honors for his work, including the Lasker Award in 1968 and the Order of Merit from the British government in 1969. He was also the recipient of the Order of the Star of South Africa, the highest honor given by the South African government. Barnard died on 2 September 2001 in Paphos, Cyprus. He was 78 years old.

A South African heart surgeon who performed the world's first heart transplant. In 1967 Barnard headed a 30-person surgical team that transplanted the heart of a young girl who had died in an auto accident into a diabetic 55-year-old man whose heart was failing and who was near death. The patient lived just 18 days after the operation, but his next heart transplant resulted in the patient living for another 1-1/2 years. Over the years he performed more than 75 transplant operations altogether.
Christiaan Barnard was born on November 8, 1922 in Beauford West, South Africa as Christiaan Neethling Barnard. He was married to Karin Setzkorn, Barbara Maria Zoellner and Aletta Gertruida Louw.
