David Bailey is an English fashion and portrait photographer. He is best known for his work in the 1960s with models such as Jean Shrimpton and Penelope Tree, and for his photographs of celebrities such as Mick Jagger and The Beatles. He has also photographed landscapes and social documentary projects. Bailey was born in Leytonstone, East London, to Herbert Bailey, a tailor's cutter, and his wife, Sharon. He attended the Worshipful School of Carpenters in Stratford and left school at the age of 15 to become a photographic assistant. Bailey's career began in 1960 when he was hired by British Vogue as a fashion photographer. He quickly gained a reputation for his innovative and unconventional approach to photography. He was known for his use of bold colors and dramatic lighting, and for his willingness to take risks. Bailey has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Royal Photographic Society's Centenary Medal in 2003 and the Royal Photographic Society's Hood Medal in 2006. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2001. Bailey has been married four times and has four children. He currently lives in London with his wife, Catherine Dyer.
