On September 16, 2019 it was announced that Hixon would be taking a leave of absence for the 2019-2020 season, and that assistant coach Aaron Toomey would be the interim head coach. On April 13, 2020 Hixon announced his retirement.
At the end of the 2017-18 season, Hixon won his 800th career game at Amherst. As of April 2019, he has completed his 42nd year as head coach, compiling an overall record of 826-293. His win percentage of .738 is the 5th highest in NCAA division III Men's Basketball history.
Hixon enjoyed a successful coaching career by coaching Amherst to a 693-252 overall record (.733), which currently ranks among the best in NCAA history and fourth among active NCAA Division III coaches. He led the team to 15 NCAA Tournaments, eight of those appearances resulting in a trip to at least the national quarterfinals. He won national championships in 2006-07 and 2012-13.
David Hixon (born December 3, 1952) is an American college basketball head coach who spent forty-two years coaching Amherst College. As head coach, he transformed the Amherst men's basketball program into one of the best in the nation. He was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003.
