David J. Lesar is an American businessman who has served as the chairman of Halliburton since 2017. He was born on May 30, 1953 in Madison, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. Lesar began his career in the oil and gas industry in 1977, when he joined Arthur Andersen & Co. as an auditor. He then moved to Arthur Andersen's energy consulting practice, where he worked for five years. In 1982, he joined Schlumberger Limited, where he held various positions in the United States and Europe. In 1993, Lesar joined Halliburton as the company's chief financial officer. He was promoted to president and chief operating officer in 1998, and then to chairman and chief executive officer in 2000. He served as chairman and CEO until 2017, when he was succeeded by Jeff Miller. Lesar then became executive chairman of Halliburton, a position he held until 2018. As of 2021, David J. In 1995, Lesar joined Halliburton. Within a year of his arrival, Lesar was appointed as CEO of KBR, in addition to his duties as CFO of Halliburton. In 1997, Lesar was appointed as the company's President and Chief operating officer. In 2000, Lesar became CEO of Halliburton. He stepped down as the CEO in 2017 and became the Chairman of Halliburton's board of directors. He retired on December 31, 2018 in accordance with the company's mandatory retirement age. He was succeeded by CEO and President Jeff Miller.
In November 2014, Lesar faced criticism over his bid to take over Baker Hughes: "the smaller oil-field services rival, in an email to Mr. Lesar, described Halliburton's actions as intransigent and inappropriate".
