E. Barrett Prettyman Jr. is a journalist and former federal judge who was born on June 1, 1925 in Washington, D.C. He attended the University of Virginia and Harvard Law School, and was admitted to the bar in 1950. He served as a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson from 1951 to 1952. Prettyman was a partner in the Washington, D.C. law firm of Covington & Burling from 1952 to 1961. He was appointed to the United States District Court for the District of Columbia in 1961, and served as Chief Judge from 1975 to 1982. He was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in 1982, and served as Chief Judge from 1989 to 1991. Prettyman retired from the bench in 1991, and returned to the practice of law at Covington & Burling. He has also served as a visiting professor at the Georgetown University Law Center. He served as law clerk to United States Supreme Court justices Robert H. Jackson, Felix Frankfurter, and John Marshall Harlan II. Prettyman then practiced law in Washington, D.C. In 1962, Prettyman negotiated an agreement with Fidel Castro to secure the release of prisoners involved in the Bay of Pigs invasion. Prettyman served as special counsel to the United States House of Representatives Ethics Committee in the 1980s involving the Abscam investigation. Prettyman died in a hospital in Washington, D.C. from a respiratory ailment. His father was United States federal judge E. Barrett Prettyman.
Born in Washington, D.C., Prettyman graduated from St. Albans School in Washington, D.C. He then served in the United States Army, in Europe, during World War II. In 1949, Prettyman graduated from Yale University. He then worked as a journalist for two years in Rhode Island. In 1953, Prettyman received a law degree from the University of Virginia Law School.
