Elvira Woodruff is an American author and illustrator of children's books. She is best known for her book, The Secret Garden, which was adapted into a movie in 1993. She has written and illustrated over 30 books, including The Little House, The Cat Who Went to Heaven, and The Wind in the Willows. Woodruff was born in Somerville, New Jersey, and grew up in nearby Princeton. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design, where she earned a BFA in illustration. After college, she worked as a freelance illustrator for magazines and advertising agencies. Woodruff's first book, The Secret Garden, was published in 1982. It was an instant success and has been adapted into a movie, a musical, and a television series. Her other books include The Little House, The Cat Who Went to Heaven, and The Wind in the Willows. Woodruff has won numerous awards for her work, including the Caldecott Honor Award, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, and the New York Times Best Illustrated Book Award. She has also been nominated for the Hans Christian Andersen Award. Woodruff currently lives in Princeton, New Jersey, with her husband and two children. She continues to write and illustrate children's books.

She held diverse jobs including janitor, gardener, ice-cream truck driver, receptionist, window-dresser, store owner, and baker.
