Ernie Banks was an American professional baseball player who played for the Chicago Cubs from 1953 to 1971. He was a two-time National League Most Valuable Player and a 14-time All-Star. Banks was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977. Banks was born in Dallas, Texas, and attended Booker T. Washington High School in Dallas. He began his professional baseball career in 1950 with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro American League. He made his Major League debut with the Cubs in 1953. Banks was known for his enthusiasm and optimism, and was nicknamed "Mr. Cub". He was a popular figure in Chicago, and was beloved by Cubs fans. He was also known for his philanthropy, and was active in the Chicago community. Banks died on January 23, 2015, at the age of 83. He was survived by his wife, Liz, and their two children.
