Turner began his career in the film industry in 2003, working as a production assistant on the documentary film The Last King of Scotland. He then went on to work as a production assistant on the documentary film The Imposter (2012). In 2010, Turner co-directed the documentary film Senna, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. He then went on to direct the documentary film Amy (2015), which won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. In 2019, Turner directed the documentary film Diego Maradona, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
