Hilmer Kenty is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1976 to 1988. He held the WBA lightweight title from 1980 to 1981. Kenty was born on July 20, 1955 in Austin, Texas. He began boxing at the age of 15 and had an amateur record of 40-2. He turned professional in 1976 and won his first 15 fights. In 1980, Kenty won the WBA lightweight title by defeating Ernesto Espana. He defended the title twice before losing it to Livingstone Bramble in 1981. Kenty continued to fight until 1988, when he retired with a record of 44-7-1. Kenty was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2004. He currently resides in Austin, Texas. Kenty turned pro in 1977. In 1980, Kenty captured the WBA Lightweight Title with a TKO over Ernesto España, becoming Emanuel Steward's first world champion, and the first world champion from Detroit since Joe Louis decades earlier. Kenty and Thomas Hearns both won WBA belts together and became known as the Motor City Cobras. Kenty defended his belt three times before losing it to Sean O'Grady in 1981, and retired in 1984.
Kenty won the National AAU Lightweight championship in 1974 and 1976. He beat Aaron Pryor in the 1976 national A.A.U. Golden Gloves.
