Hoagy Carmichael was an American singer, songwriter, and actor. He was born in Bloomington, Indiana, on November 22, 1899. He was best known for his compositions "Stardust" and "Georgia on My Mind," both of which became standards. He also wrote the lyrics for "Heart and Soul" and "The Nearness of You." Carmichael began his career as a jazz pianist and singer in the 1920s. He wrote his first song, "Riverboat Shuffle," in 1924. He went on to write many more songs, including "Rockin' Chair," "Lazybones," and "Ole Buttermilk Sky." Carmichael's career as an actor began in the 1930s. He appeared in several films, including To Have and Have Not (1944) and The Best Years of Our Lives (1946). He also appeared in the television series The Twilight Zone and The Dick Van Dyke Show. Carmichael was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1971. He died on December 27, 1981, in Rancho Mirage, California.

His autobiographies are "The Stardust Road" and "Sometimes I Wonder".
