In October 2018, Nelson contributed an op-ed for CNN discussing Brian Kemp's conflict of interest as a gubernatorial candidate while being Secretary of State. Later that same month, she penned an op-ed for Bustle warning Americans about voter intimidation.

In 2014, Nelson wrote an op-ed for the New York Times that considered the challenges and opportunities for President Barack Obama in the aftermath of the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown. Earlier that year, Nelson wrote an op-ed for Reuters on the importance of passing the Voting Rights Amendment Act.

Before she returned to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Nelson was the Associate Dean for Faculty Scholarship and Associate Director of the Ronald H. Brown Center for Civil Rights and Economic Development as well as a full-time professor at St. John's University. While there, she also created and managed an annual student program at the Supreme Court of the United States and helped lead the Ronald H. Brown Prep Program for College Students. Nelson's scholarship focuses on domestic and comparative election law, race, and democratic theory. Nelson has taught classes on topics such as Election Law and Political Participation, Comparative Election Law, Voting Rights, Professional Responsibility, Constitutional Law, and more. Nelson's most recent publication, The Causal Context of Disparate Vote Denial, 54 B.C.L. Rev. 579, published in 2013, looks at Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and the connection between race and voter suppression.

Nelson received the 2013 Derrick A. Bell Award from the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) Secretion on Minority Groups. That same year, she was also named one of Lawyers of Color's 50 Under 50 minority professors making an impact on legal education.

Nelson started practicing law after receiving the 1998 NAACP LDF/Fried Frank Fellowship. She got her B.A. from New York University and her J.D. from UCLA School of Law. Later, Nelson researched political disenfranchisement of people with criminal convictions and the advancement of democracy in Ghana as a Fulbright Scholar at the Legal Resources Center in Accra, Ghana.
