Jayant was born into a family of actors, and his father was a theater actor. He began his career in the theater, and later moved to films. He made his debut in the film 'Kismet' in 1943. He went on to act in over 200 films, and was known for his villainous roles. He was also a successful producer, and produced several films. Jayant was married to actress Shobhna Samarth, and they had two sons, actor Joy Mukherjee and producer Goldie. Jayant was awarded the Padma Shri in 1971 for his contribution to Indian cinema. He passed away on 28th August, 2012 at the age of 96. As of 2021, Jayant's net worth is estimated to be around $1 million.
