She was born in Sheffield, England, and attended the University of Sheffield, where she studied English and Drama. Jayne began her career in journalism in the early 1980s, working as a reporter for BBC Radio Sheffield. She then moved to BBC Radio 2, where she presented the breakfast show for two years. In 1984, she joined the BBC's Breakfast Time, where she presented the news and current affairs. She also presented the BBC's Newsnight programme for a number of years. Irving went on to present for various regional TV companies, including Central Weekend for ITV Central, Westcountry Focus for Westcountry Television, and also the Living satellite channel. In 1999, she presented the Cheating Hearts strand on Talk Radio (now called talkSPORT).
