Born on May 6, 1956 in Nashville, Tennessee, Ellis is the son of a minister and a schoolteacher. He attended the University of Tennessee, where he earned a degree in theater. Ellis began his career in the theater, appearing in productions of The Glass Menagerie, The Crucible, and The Tempest. He made his film debut in the 1989 drama Lean on Me. He went on to appear in films such as The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Notebook. On television, Ellis has had recurring roles on The West Wing, The Practice, and The Good Wife. He has also guest-starred on shows such as Law & Order, NYPD Blue, and ER. Ellis has been married to actress and producer Amy Madigan since 1982. They have one daughter, Lily.
