Timeline
In 1985 Surfer magazine named Cabell as one of the top twenty-five surfers whose innovative surfing style changed the sport. Outside of surfing, Joey has also enjoyed considerable success as a co-founder of the Chart House steak and seafood restaurant chain.
In the wake of this impressive winning streak, Cabell was invited to participate in the Expression Session contests that were held in 1970 and 1971.
Following two years spent in Colorado, Joey returned to competitive surfing with a vengeance in 1967: He won the Makaha International in both 1967 and 1968, the 1968 Peru International, and the Duke Kahanamoku Invitational in 1969.
Cabell's remarkable track record as a champion surfer includes placing first in the 1963 Makaha International contest, pulling off the same exact feat in the 1963 Malibu Invitational, runner-up in the 1964 United States Surfing Association final standings, and placing third in the World Surfing Championship competition that same year.
In addition, Joey was a key figure in the 1960's shortboard revolution by setting a new precedent with his groundbreaking theory on speed surfing whereby a surfer rides in a crouch with his feet and knees together seeking the fastest line across a wave.
Cabell and his business partner friend Buzzy Bent opened the first Chart House restaurant in Aspen, Colorado in the early 1960's. Subsequent Chart House restaurants were opened in Redondo Beach and Newport Beach in California as well Waikiki and Honolulu in Hawaii.
Joey established himself in the late 1950's as an expert surfer of exceptional polish and versatility who could deftly ride waves ranging two to twenty-five feet tall.
Champion regularfoot surfer Joey Cabell was born in 1938 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Cabell grew up on the beach at Waikiki and first began surfing at age seven.
