John Perry Barlow is an American poet, essayist, and political activist who has been associated with both the cyberlibertarian and the Grateful Dead music scenes. He is best known for his work as a lyricist for the Grateful Dead, as well as his work as a co-founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Freedom of the Press Foundation. Barlow was born in Pinedale, Wyoming, and grew up on a ranch in the area. He attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he studied comparative religion and graduated in 1969. After college, he moved to San Francisco and became involved in the Grateful Dead scene. He wrote lyrics for the band, including "Cassidy," "Mexicali Blues," and "Black-Throated Wind." In 1990, Barlow co-founded the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to defending civil liberties in the digital world. He also co-founded the Freedom of the Press Foundation in 2012, which works to protect and defend public-interest journalism. Barlow has written extensively on the topics of digital rights, civil liberties, and the Internet. He has written for Wired, The New York Times, and The Guardian, among other publications. He is also the author of the book A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace. Barlow has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the EFF Pioneer Award, the National Magazine Award, and the Freedom of Expression Award from the National Coalition Against Censorship. He was also inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame in 2013.
