He is best known for his work on the BBC television series Think of a Number and Think Again. Ball began his career as a stage actor, appearing in various productions in the West End of London. He then moved into television, appearing in a number of shows including The Goodies, Doctor Who, and The Two Ronnies. In the 1970s, Ball began writing and presenting educational programmes for children, including Think of a Number and Think Again. He also wrote and presented the BBC series Maths Magic and Maths Adventure. Ball has written several books on mathematics and science, including Johnny Ball Reveals All, Maths for Mums and Dads, and Maths for Fun. He has also written a number of books for children, including the Think of a Number series. Ball has been awarded several honorary degrees, including an honorary doctorate from the University of Bristol in 2008. He was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2012 New Year Honours for services to education.
