Linda Spilker is an American planetary scientist and the project scientist for the Cassini–Huygens mission to Saturn. She was born in 1955 in California and earned her bachelor's degree in physics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1977. She then went on to earn her master's degree in physics from the University of California, San Diego in 1979 and her doctorate in planetary science from the California Institute of Technology in 1984. Spilker has been involved in numerous space missions, including the Galileo mission to Jupiter, the Cassini–Huygens mission to Saturn, and the Mars Exploration Rovers mission. She has also served as a member of the National Research Council's Space Studies Board and the NASA Advisory Council. In addition to her work in space exploration, Spilker has also been involved in numerous public outreach activities, including speaking engagements, television appearances, and writing articles for popular science magazines. She has also written several books, including Saturn: A New View (2006) and The Cassini–Huygens Mission: Exploring the Saturn System (2008). Spilker got a B.A.in Physics from the California State University, Fullerton, in 1977 and an M.S. in Physics from the California State University, Los Angeles in 1983. She obtained a Ph.D. in Geophysics and Space Physics from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1992. She joined the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 1977, initially working on the Voyager missions that were launched the same year. She became a Cassini mission scientist in 1990. In 1997, she was the editor of a NASA publication that summarizes the mission's legacy. Since 2010, she has been the Cassini mission project scientist, a role in which she directs the entire team's scientific investigations.
