He is best known for his work with the progressive rock band Jethro Tull, which he joined in 1969 and remained with until the band's dissolution in 2014. He has also released several solo albums and collaborated with other artists. Barre was born in Birmingham, England, and began playing guitar at the age of nine. He studied music at the Birmingham School of Music and later at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He began his professional career in the early 1960s, playing in various blues and jazz bands. In 1969, he joined Jethro Tull, replacing founding member Mick Abrahams. He remained with the band for the next 45 years, playing on all of their albums and touring extensively. He is credited with writing or co-writing several of the band's songs, including "Aqualung", "Locomotive Breath", and "Cross-Eyed Mary". Barre has also released several solo albums, including A Trick of Memory (1995), Stage Left (1997), and Back to Steel (2011). He has also collaborated with other artists, including Ian Anderson, John Wetton, and Dave Pegg. Barre has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Jethro Tull. He has also received several awards, including the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music in 2011.
