Olena Zelenska is a Ukrainian politician who has served as the President of Ukraine since 2019. She is the first woman to hold the office. Zelenska was born in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, in 1978. She graduated from the Kyiv National Economic University in 2000 with a degree in law. Zelenska began her career as a lawyer in 2001, working for the law firm of Yuriy Lutsenko. She then moved to the law firm of Serhiy Vlasenko, where she worked until 2014. In 2014, she joined the team of the then-President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, as an adviser. In 2019, Zelenska ran for President of Ukraine and won the election with 73% of the vote. She was sworn in as President on May 20, 2019. As President, Zelenska has focused on fighting corruption, improving the economy, and strengthening Ukraine's ties with the European Union. She has also sought to improve relations with Russia, and has called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

Olena Kiyashko (maiden name) was born in Kryvyi Rih on 6 February 1978. She and her future husband were schoolmates, but they were not acquainted. Zelensky once said that he knew many of his classmates, but not Olena. They got acquainted much later — when Olena was studying at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Kryvyi Rih National University.
