R. C. Thielemann is an American physicist and professor of physics at the University of Texas at Austin. He is a leading expert in nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics, and is known for his work on the nuclear reaction rates of astrophysical processes. He has published over 500 papers and has been awarded numerous honors, including the prestigious E.O. Lawrence Award from the U.S. Department of Energy. Thielemann was born in Houston, Texas, and received his B.S. in physics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1977. He then went on to receive his Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1981. After completing his Ph.D., Thielemann worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of California, Santa Cruz. In 1985, Thielemann joined the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin, where he is currently a professor of physics. He has held visiting positions at the University of California, Berkeley, the University of California, Santa Cruz, the University of Washington, and the University of Zurich. Thielemann has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the E.O. Lawrence Award from the U.S. Department of Energy in 2002, the Alexander von Humboldt Research Award in 2004, and the American Physical Society's Tom W. Bonner Prize in Nuclear Physics in 2006. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
