Roy Romer is an American politician and educator who served as the 39th Governor of Colorado from 1987 to 1999. He was also the Superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District from 2000 to 2006. Romer was born on October 31, 1928 in Garden City, Kansas. He attended the University of Oklahoma, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1951. He then attended the University of Colorado Law School, where he earned a law degree in 1954. Romer began his political career in 1962, when he was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives. He served in the House until 1966, when he was elected to the Colorado Senate. He served in the Senate until 1974, when he was elected to the Colorado Board of Education. He served on the Board until 1986, when he was elected Governor of Colorado. As Governor, Romer was known for his fiscal conservatism and his commitment to education. He was also a strong advocate for the environment, and he was instrumental in the passage of the Colorado Wilderness Act of 1993. Romer left office in 1999 and was appointed Superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District in 2000. He served in this position until 2006, when he retired. Romer is currently a senior fellow at the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington, D.C. He is also a member of the board of directors of the National Education Association.
