Bess played in the NBA for 10 seasons, spending time with the Atlanta Hawks, the New Jersey Nets, the San Antonio Spurs, and the Los Angeles Clippers. He averaged 8.2 points per game and 4.2 rebounds per game in his career. He was a member of the 1983–84 San Antonio Spurs team that won the NBA championship. Bess retired from the NBA in 1988 and returned to Hartsville, where he has been involved in various business ventures. He is currently 67 years old.
