He was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the fourth round of the 2004 NFL Draft. He played college football at Kansas State. Lilja was born on October 15, 1981 in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended Shawnee Mission Northwest High School in Shawnee Mission, Kansas, where he was a two-time All-State selection. He was also a two-time All-Big 12 selection at Kansas State University. Lilja played nine seasons in the NFL, spending the first eight with the Indianapolis Colts. He was a part of the Colts' Super Bowl XLI championship team. After announcing his retirement on December 31, 2012, Lilja agreed to terms to join the Denver Broncos on July 31, 2013. He was released on August 31, 2013.
