Saimir Pirgu is an Albanian tenor who has performed in some of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Royal Opera House in London. He has won numerous awards, including the prestigious Premio Abbiati from the Italian Critics Association in 2011. Pirgu was born in Elbasan, Albania, and began his musical studies at the age of seven. He studied at the Tirana Conservatory and then at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. He made his professional debut in 2003 at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma. Pirgu has performed in a wide range of operas, including Mozart's Don Giovanni, La Bohème, and Così fan tutte, Verdi's La Traviata, Puccini's Tosca, and Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia. He has also performed in several contemporary operas, including John Adams' Doctor Atomic and Philip Glass' Akhnaten. Pirgu made his debut with Opera Australia in 2017 as Shepherd in Szymanowski's King Roger at the Sydney Opera House.
In December 2015, he released his album Il Mio Canto, edited by Opus Arte.
Pirgu won the first prize in the international competitions Caruso in Milan in 2002 and Tito Schipa in Lecce in the same year. He was recognized with the Franco Corelli award in 2009 in Ancona (Italy) and with the prestigious "Pavarotti d'Oro Award" in 2013.
