Saul Alinsky was an American community organizer and writer. He is best known for his 1971 book Rules for Radicals. Alinsky's organizing skills were focused on improving the living conditions of poor communities across the United States. He is often noted for his 1971 book Rules for Radicals. Alinsky was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Russian Jewish immigrant parents. He attended the University of Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in 1930. He then went on to study criminology and sociology at the University of Chicago and the University of California, Berkeley. Alinsky's career as a community organizer began in the 1930s, when he worked with the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) to organize workers in the Chicago area. He later worked with the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF), a non-profit organization he founded in 1940. Through the IAF, Alinsky worked to organize communities in Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, and other cities. Alinsky's work as a community organizer was influential in the civil rights movement of the 1960s. He was an advisor to Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders. Alinsky's book Rules for Radicals, published in 1971, was a guide for activists and organizers. Alinsky died in 1972 at the age of 63. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.
