His father was of Italian (from Cotronei, Catanzaro, Calabria) and German (from Berlin and Gerlachsheim) descent, and his maternal grandfather, born Feliks Karol Czarnyszewicz, was a Polish emigrant from Kliczew and Bobrujsk (now, respectively, Klichaw and Babruysk, each of which is in Mahilyow Voblast, Belarus). Steven's maternal grandmother had English and distant Welsh ancestry; also, on the show Who Do You Think You Are? (2010), Steven's daughter Liv Tyler discovered that Steven's great-great-great-grandfather, Robert J. Elliott, was of half or part African-American ancestry.
