Thom Bell is a Jamaican-born American songwriter, record producer, and arranger. He is best known for his work with the Philadelphia soul music scene of the 1970s. He has written and produced hits for artists such as The Delfonics, The Stylistics, The Spinners, and The O'Jays. He has also worked with artists such as Lou Rawls, Aretha Franklin, and Diana Ross. Bell was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the early 1960s. He began his career as a session musician and arranger for Cameo-Parkway Records. He then went on to become a staff producer and arranger for the Philadelphia International Records label. Bell has been credited with creating the "Philly Soul" sound, which is characterized by lush string arrangements, soulful vocals, and a heavy emphasis on the rhythm section. In early 1968 they had their first smash with "La-La Means I Love You", and for the next two years wrote, produced and arranged such hits for the group as "I'm Sorry", "Break Your Promise", "Ready Or Not, Here I Come" and "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time").
Composer / arranger / record producer Thom Bell is known as one of the chief architects of "The Sound Of Philadelphia". In the mid-'60s he was the house pianist at The Uptown Theatre in Philadelphia and later became musical director for Chubby Checker. In 1966 he partnered up with entrepreneur Stan Watson to produce a local group called The Delfonics.
He and childhood friend Kenny Gamble recorded an unsuccessful record in 1959.
