Thomas Chatterton Williams is an American writer, critic, and public speaker. He is the author of the memoir Self-Portrait in Black and White (2020), which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the essay collection Losing My Cool (2010). He is a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine and a contributing editor at Harper's Magazine. He has written for The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The New Republic, and The Paris Review, among other publications. He is a 2020 Guggenheim Fellow in Nonfiction. Williams was born in 1981 in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in East Orange. He attended Rutgers University, where he earned a B.A. in English and African American Studies. He later earned an M.A. in Creative Writing from New York University. Williams is married to the writer and editor Ashley Ford. They have two children.

Thomas Chatterton Williams was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1981, to a black father, Clarence Williams, and a white mother, Kathleen. He was named after the English poet Thomas Chatterton. He was raised in Fanwood, New Jersey and attended Union Catholic Regional High School in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. Williams graduated from Georgetown University with a bachelor's degree in philosophy. He also completed a master’s degree from New York University's Cultural Reporting and Criticism program.
