Thomas Henry Ismay was an English businessman and the founder of the White Star Line. He was born on 7 January 1837 in Maryport, Cumbria, England. He was the son of a shipbuilder and was educated at the local grammar school. At the age of 15, Ismay began working for his father's shipbuilding business. He quickly rose through the ranks and eventually became a partner in the business. In 1867, Ismay founded the White Star Line, a shipping company that quickly became one of the most successful in the world. Ismay was a shrewd businessman and was able to make the White Star Line one of the most profitable shipping companies in the world. He was also a philanthropist and donated large sums of money to charities and educational institutions. Ismay died on 17 November 1899 at the age of 62. He left behind a legacy of success and philanthropy that continues to this day.

Around 1870 Thomas Ismay drafted a new set of rules and regulations for his brand new trend setting steamers, RMS Oceanic (1870), RMS Atlantic and the RMS Baltic (1871).
On 7 April 1859 Thomas married Margaret, the daughter of Luke Bruce. In 1867, he acquired the flag and branding of the White Star Line. The family lived at Beach Lawn, Crosby.
