Warren Spahn was a professional baseball player who played for the Boston Braves, Milwaukee Braves, New York Mets, and San Francisco Giants. He was a left-handed pitcher and was known for his pinpoint control and his ability to pitch effectively late into games. He was a 20-time All-Star and won the Cy Young Award in 1957. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973. Spahn was born in Buffalo, New York, and grew up in Buffalo and Cleveland, Ohio. He attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he played baseball and basketball. He was signed by the Boston Braves in 1942 and made his major league debut in 1942. Spahn was a workhorse throughout his career, leading the National League in innings pitched eight times and in complete games twelve times. He was the NL's winningest pitcher in the 1950s, with a record of 122-76. He was also the NL's ERA leader in 1953 and 1957. He was a member of the 1957 World Series champion Milwaukee Braves. Spahn retired in 1965 with a career record of 363-245 and an ERA of 3.09. He was the last major league pitcher to win 300 games. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973. He died in November 2003 at the age of 82.
