Set the world record in the outdoor 1,500 meters (1956), the indoor mile (1954, 1955), and the indoor 1,500-meters (1955).
Member of the 1952 and the 1956 US Olympic track team, but was banned by the AAU from running in the 1,500 meters in the 1952 Games because he made the team in the 5,000 meters, then was banned by the AAU from the 1956 Games for allegedly accepting too much expense money from meet promoters.
