William David Powell is an American television producer and director. He was born on February 27, 1925 in California, U.S. He is best known for his work on the television series The Waltons, which he produced and directed from 1972 to 1981. Powell began his career in television in the 1950s, working as a production assistant on shows such as The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and The Jack Benny Program. He then moved on to directing episodes of shows such as The Donna Reed Show, The Andy Griffith Show, and The Dick Van Dyke Show. In 1972, Powell was hired to produce and direct The Waltons, a show about a family living in rural Virginia during the Great Depression. The show was a huge success, and Powell remained with the show until its end in 1981. Powell has also directed episodes of shows such as Little House on the Prairie, Highway to Heaven, and Touched by an Angel. He has also produced and directed several made-for-TV movies, including The Homecoming: A Christmas Story, which was the pilot for The Waltons. Powell is now retired and lives in California. He is 93 years old.

In 1968, after suffering from depression, hepatitis and kidney problems that had forced him to quit writing, he died by suicide by stabbing himself repeatedly in the upper body while in the shower. He left a four-page note addressed to his father, to whom he was still very close. The last two sentences were revealed to the public: "Things aren't so good here. I'm going where it's better."
On Saturday, December 22, 1956, at age 31, Powell wed former child actress Patricia Parsons (1931-2006), exchanging their wedding vows at the home of his father, on Vereda Norte in Palm Springs, California. The wedding ceremony which was performed by Judge Eugene Therieau, with his father as best man and Parsons' sister Mrs. Kenneth Zook as matron of honor. The couple honeymooned in Las Vegas, Nevada. They divorced on September 19, 1957.
Powell was the only child of actor William Powell and actress Eileen Wilson, who divorced in 1930. He graduated from Princeton, magna cum laude in English.
